Acoustic Guitar Microphone Techniques

recording technique guitar help please?
I have a Shure SM57 microphone and I was wondering where the position should be to get the best sound quality that I would need to write. im not connected to any amplifier. all the techniques, tips would be greatly appreciated. thanks
If you're in a room sound good, have one person play it when you walk around. Wherever it sounds better, put it there. That's mic'ing environment, and can give great results - Led Zep used ambient / mic'ing far away, like the drums on "When the Levee Breaks". (well, throughout the album, but whatever) This may sound very good when you use two microphones in an XY pattern. If the room is not to sound too hot, or there is some noise in the background, close mic it. From my experience a little limited, you want to point the microphone to the fretboard, where around the neck meets the body, and begin slowly sweeping back the soundhole to reach the ideal point. Distance should be as close as possible, but far enough that the sound of the pick against the strings do not overwhelm the notes -- start at 6 "away and back until you can play and it will not overload the input. I tried to compression during recording, but at some point decided it was not for me - you can control things much better after that everything is recorded and the computer. Feel free to play with him, however. I used a little compression and a highpass at around 200 Hz (or more, depending on the material) to help tighten and even the sound (high-pass first then compress slightly). Use your ears first! Good luck! Saul
