How do I play along with the battery down?
I am a beginner bass player, I know you are supposed to "lock in" with the battery, but I really do not understand. I know it's kind of a tricky thing to explain online, but any help would be greatly appreciated and perhaps some exercises. thanks.
To put it simply, listen to what the bass is doing. The bass drum hits that defined the music sensation, are the ones that you should follow with the bass guitar if you're trying to play "in the pocket," as you describe. That is, if the drummer hits eighth in 1 and a quarter note, 3: 1-e (2), 3 (4) … is how you should set your bassline. Feel free to add fill notes, but his hit "main" notes should complement the bass drum. A perfect example that comes to mind that I'm saying, is the main riff of "Magic Carpet Ride" by Steppenwolf trade (Chevy a few years ago). Listen to it after reading this, and it should help to understand a little better.
