Bass Guitar Frequencies

Do I need to buy a distortion pedal especially for the low?
or I would be able to use a built guitar? I know you can not use a bass with a guitar amp, because the bass frequencies damage to the amplifier, but I'm not sure about the distortion pedal.
my brother plays bass and he used a distortion pedal bass around 70 pounds called ODB-3 http://www.bossus.com/gear/productdetails.php?ProductId=155. sounds fantastic and gives you the best overdrive sound that you could possibly get, you could try to find a normal guitar distortion pedal down, but I doubt it will be as good, worth every penny. I hope this helped.
