Work out what you need for your Home Recording Studio

An important consideration when looking at creating a "studio home recording 'is how you will use it. You will need to discover how many things you want to write or call anytime or you can end uneccessary art or not enough!

Take a typical example of "Vinnie" the guitarist who has a desire to show his band 'as music should be played.

No matter how many times he tried to explain, never be too sure, so the only way he can see to achieve this is to record everything "correctly" to yourself.

What needs to Vinnie?

He must record a basic drum pattern - nothing fancy - he wants to record two guitars, a guitar, he wants to record a bass player and a record lead vocals and two backing harmonies.

Vinnie is of course not going to do all this while so even if he needs to write things that he needs 9 of 9 channels?

No.

All he really "need" is a maximum 4 inputs and two pre-amps. He will also need a microphone to sing and record on his guitar, let's assume that he has a guitar amplifier simulator to record guitars and electric bass, a drum machine that has a physical or inside your own computer or hard disk recorder.

Vinnie could easily walk to its online music store or collect and find what you need to get the job done. He could look on a packet-recording computer with appropriate software sound card and specializes in audio recording. Some companies provide all these packages in a dictionary, M-Audio, Presonus Pro-Tools and are good brands to look like a starting point, but be aware that recording onto a computer can be a frustrating experience if you're not computer savy.

alternative Vinnie is the stand-alone hard disk recorder with a built in mixer section. Any of offereings from Fostex, Yamaha or Boss / Roland would take care of their needs at this point just want to Vinnie his ideas about the physical plain as soon as possible so that others can hear them, so he probably will need a CD burner thrown into the equation unless your machine can connect to a computer as a number they can now do.

Now let's see Barabra another example of playing in a quartet folk / rock. They want to record some songs to CD. All instruments uses his band are acoustic, bass, violin, guitar and banjo.

Three of the group also sing. Now Barbara is fortunate to have a large detached garage space available for your group to be tested and delivered not disturb the neighbors, making too much noise, she intends to record the band as a whole 'best vibe, what she needs?

Instrument X 4 microphones or DI injection [Direct] boxes
3 x Vocal microphones
8 microphone inputs Preamps
Ability to record 8 channels at once.

There are some limitations with stand alone recorders, some of them will only let you record 2 channels at the same time, another thing to consider is the "quality" of the recordings.

Some years ago, during the "compression algorithm 'wars, clever boffins have discovered that our ears can" fill in " missing information in the same way that you can look for the letters of a word scramble, but are still able to decipher what is.The boffins kept removing bits than our ear heard, until they came up with a] algorythm formula [who beguiled our ears in most cases. These are known as "compressed" formats like 'crush' the sound so smart that we do not perceive.

Almost all commercial and residential recording software will record "Linear" [uncompressed] files to the computer hard disk. Pro-Tools, Logic Audio, Cubase, Sonar we all do. Later, when you 'mix-down songs you can turn them into mp3 files for podcast or download to your portable digital music player. Adobe Audition and Steinberg's Wavelab are two programs that I think the direct registration of mp3 files, but they are not 'full' multitrack programs.

When dealing with information compressed formats MP2, MP3, etc, "unnecessary" is removed so the file size [small and therefore faster downloads] - so these are "compressed" files. The advantage for the record at home is that the hard disk space is less necessary.

Consideration when looking at stand alone recorders is to ask the question I want compressed or uncompressed audio. If you have any intention of making these recordings something for the release, then the uncompressed format is best, you will lose some quality by using a compressed format, but their ideas are captured quickly for you to work later. Also keep in mind that a number of hard disk recorders can then transfer data to a system of computer software for more elaborate processing so if you use a recording format uncompressed will maintain the quality of your recording.

Now, Barabara arose when the music store to express their needs, said sales person, "she wants a high quality recording of your group, but not I have no idea about computers, "then the seller suggests a standalone unit, with eight entries that records the data in an uncompressed form. As it has a huge budget, she chooses to engage in most of the microphones for the recording session. The man at the store suggested she use condenser microphones for the instruments and Shure SM58 dynamic for vocals.

A crucial consideration is the quality at this time "pre-amplifier. What it does and why it is so important you ask?

After your microphone has done incredible job of organizing the acoustic pressure waves and convert them into electrical signals, coming through microphone cables in the "pre-amp'-a short way of saying preamplifier. For years I struggled to really 'get' that made a pre-amplifier, unitl I realized this:

When one puts the microphone signal is very very very very small. I now call this "level of mouse. After it has passed through a preamplifier becomes' level of elephant, "something that our mixing consoles and digital recorders can use easily.

Hear this:

Depending on the quality of compoments used, this amplification process can make or break the quality of recorded sound. A bad preamp will add hiss and noise to your recording

Most stand-alone recorders and computer interfaces soundcard "appropriate preamps" microphone. To to illuminate their recordings "I would suggest getting an 'engine' separate component] [pre-amplifier, although he said that the pre-amps High quality Yamaha consoles are gaining a very good reputation. Meek Focusrite / Joe Avalon / Tc Electronics are great brands. Currently I use a Focusrite Trak Twin-Pro, a device specifially for home recording enthusiasts.

In short, our friend Vinnie will probably be quite happy with an off the recorder hard drive rack with 4 or more compressed entries that 'records' files because they're just trying to show his bandmates for a rough' idea how he hears things.

Barbara who is not computer savy are looking for a more polished final product and want to record your group with the best quality of a CD of the band will launch, so she needs to write 'linear'] [non-compressed data and look for a unit with the best quality pre-amps, it can buy.
