Jane's Addiction - nothing ....? shocking question

Why is the album Shocking Jane's' Nothing that I own and bought about two years ago, now sound very different to the original versions really? the guitar lines and the tones are different, the vocal lines are different ... what the hell ... ?

The only thing I can think of is that a lot of songs on Nothings shocking where remastered for the best of "above the catacombs, in 2006 - perhaps some of these tracks are on his "nothings shocking"
