Guitar Alternate Tunings

What's Alternate tuning?
I've been trying to imitate one of my favorite solos from Pink Floyd to ground to Comfortably Numb, I encounter the problem is the tone of the soil is too far, im dead in the notes and I realize I do not have the same guitar / amp setup show, but I've heard of alternative tunings, currently possess fund basic theory of music and I use an electronic tuner to tune my strings, im guessing its in standard tuning. My question is is an alternate tuning? And it could help me get closer to the sound that I want to accomplish?
Alternate tuning is when the guitar is not is tuned to standard EADGBE. A lot of bands playing in drop D, drop a game in C, etc. .. You will have to set it differently. Make sure a good guide though. If you have a bad, will sound.
