Beginners and guitar! Hmm, not exactly the best combination, are they? The reason I say that is because I too was a beginner at one point in time and I also had the same mistakes that most beginners that despite having read through a thousand pages of beginner's guides and literature. Now, about 4 years later, here I am preaching to the choir. But I just can not help it. If you're smart, you'll get the essence of things by the end this article. If not, then I'll see it four years down the line saying that the same sense that I said up there. Then you're ready to proceed? Beginners are an impatient species. From the first day, it seems they want everything faster than the average Joe on the street. The moment I held a guitar the first time, I was hoping to beat my instructor. After a month, I expected to beat the Eagles (Wow!). If you are going the same direction, then stop. Here are five pointers that should help enormously in their learning process as a beginner.

  1. Slow and steady wins the race. The person who said it was much smarter than most of us. The first lesson for beginners who want to learn the guitar is "be patient". No learned to play guitar in 3 minutes or 60 minutes a day or for that matter. So if you're still investing their money on books that promise to teach guitar a matter of minutes, then it's a total waste of your investments. The guitar is a musical instrument that requires great skill and patience to master. Therefore, set a realistic deadline to learn the basics and a lifetime to master it.
  2. Holding the guitar properly. You only learn once and you will probably find that you can never forget your first year learning. Once you get your basics right and hold the guitar properly. It should feel comfortable in your hands and you should be able to play both frets and strings with equal grace.
  3. Start with finger exercises. I I still remember how my instructor always told me to warm up every time I wanted to play and I wish I could strangle him (If my instructors read this, so please forgive me). But over the years, this warm up routine that helped me improve my skills. Finger exercises are very important part of your learning curve. May seem thing more tedious at first, but without it, you will be like a stuttering kid to recite a poem.
  4. Start playing lead and then proceed for strings. Once you start playing chords, the devil impatient and tend to assume that you want to play chords more advanced in a few weeks. But chords are the core central one guitar lesson and you need to give due time and effort. Slow down and take a chord at once. Master it and then proceed to the next.
  5. Practice, my boy, practice. The last thing I want to do is play his guitar once every week. I remember I used to practice almost 8 hours a day, while learning the instrument. She has gone down now. But I still adjust the strings at least once a day. No amount of lectures or reading material that will teach you what will practice.

Keep these five things in mind, following routine until you have reached an advanced stage. (You can play a few songs) and then keep the last point in five. Enjoy!
