How to get a good guitar tone?
How can I get a good metal tone like a Mesa Boogie Rectifier without shelling out too?
So, how close you want to get the sound right and how much you're willing to pay for it? Are you looking for a pedal or an amp? There are many missing information here. If you want a lot of distortion on the cheap, then the Line 6 Spider III could do it for you. Personally, I do not like them (which tend to use a lot of mid-gain sounds that they do very well). But they have a couple of models that they are very distorted. If you are looking for a pedal work with an existing amplifier, the Seymour Duncan Twin Tube Mayhem is probably the best pedal I've heard sounds hard to overdrive. Good luck.
