Guitar Diagram Strings

What does this mean for guitar?
I am teaching myself to play guitar so I'm new to all? when you go to this site and click the small box that says "show diagrams of chords" I do not understand why the chord of "C" has an "o" instead of an "x" ... I know that the "X" is where you're supposed to put your fingers to wake up So what's the difference ???.. I saw other songs had that too ... This is the page: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/m/miranda_lambert/new_strings_crd.htm thank you very much! : D
if the chord is shown as "X's and O's, the average of X is" put your finger here. " and means the O's "do not play this string" if the rope is shown with numbers, place your fingers on the figures, the average of X "does not play this string." and good luck to you!
