Resonance is all around us. Is as much a part of life like gravity or friction. And like many things in life are the resonance is so simple that we usually do not notice it even when we examine their existence, we see the complex simplicity become endless. There are many different types of resonance found in nature, which is outside the world of sound. There orbital resonance for example.
But what about the voice? Well, how is that resonance is applied the sound is simply defined as layers of sound itself. Not a big deal right? Well, not until we realize that there are three types of resonance found within the act of singing and all three must be in place and working well together to improve our vocal tones. And please note that I said that to improve our tone. Resonance is not exactly the tone itself. It is a thickener in our tone data. That's all. In fact, Webster defines resonance as the intensification and enrichment of a musical tone by supplementary vibration.
Lets look at resonance as it is used in the world of recording audio which is where (in my opinion) the tone is understood and applied in the most demanding way. Any recording studio or computer recording programs as "protools cubase or have applied on the different instruments recorded an equalizer (which is meant to shape the sound) and then an echo effect known as resonance. This effect is usually placed in instruments such as guitars, drums, piano and voice of course. Again, we have a tone shaper that q is the tone that is enhancer reverberation. The error tone vs resonance is understandable. The echo is going to be enhanced or thickening of certain frequencies more than others and the tone natural world is shaped by external vibrations, too. The fact is that both concepts of training and enforcement are very closely related, but again, are not the same. Now ... we want to reach as singers, is ultimately the shape of our tone and improve them, of course, first, before changing them artificially in a recording studio or PA. system.
