Patterns of strumming the guitar - explanations, exercises, tips?

I'm learning the guitar and so far I have been finger pick a lot so I want to focus a little strumming. I know chords, but when it comes to playing music, I'm lost. I can not understand the strumming pattern. Someone can explain or provide some exercises that you can do that I can play chords more efficiently? How do you usually know how to strum? I try to do it with music, but I got lost, eventually.

There are these two guys named Tim Gilberg and David Taub. Together, they produced hundreds of videos that explain everything you need know about guitar. I had a lot of help from them and they taught me a lot. They have a site called Next Level Guitar: http://www.nextlevelguitar.com/ They have hundres of videos to help with strumming. If you go to the site they have a link in the menu called "fingering" and there are hundreds of videos there, but I think you have to pay for them. If you check-in, then the videos of "free" link for some. I found this one in there: "How to Play Guitar for beginners Strum as "http://www.nextlevelguitar.com/content/view/1018/132/ Good Luck.
