guitar fish face

Fado. The word means fate in Portuguese. It is also the name of a certain type of music heard in the haunting mainly small cafes and bars in Lisbon. Spain has your foot tapping, fast-paced, sensual flamenco. Portugal has the fate, funeral slow sung by men and women to follow the Spanish guitar and the Portuguese guitar, a kind of 12-strings, mandolin.
According to a spokesmen for the House of Fado Museum near the area of Lisbon, Fado is a Portuguese expression of the soul.
Find real fate can be difficult, as tour operators, taxi drivers and hotels tend to tout the less-than-faith "forkloric" shows, which can be faster and exciting, but not the way to find the Portuguese soul.
On a recent trip to the Iberian Peninsula, my wife and I was determined to find the true fate, not so much to find the Portuguese soul and find a less expensive way to listen to music than the $ 60 per person dinner and show of the tour director was touting. We also were sure we could find fado live for less than $ 35 cost of the various shows offered by our hotel.
Using a guide Spain (Rick Steves' and Portugal) and the phone, we found a small cafe in the Bairro Alto section of the city, known for its night clubs, discos and restaurants. The owner of the coffee speak English, Canto do Camões, assured us we could get a full dinner and see the performance of less than $ 20 each.
With a pair of Connecticut we are on the trip, Joe and Amy McManus, made a scary ride in a taxi driven by a driver who sped quickly through the streets narrow, lack of other cars and pedestrians by the thickness of a penny spent.
The driver let us off at the base of a climb and pointed to a street just too thin, even for its small car, the Travessa da Espera. We climbed the sidewalk to walk two blocks before reaching the corner of Camões, a small café with capacity for up to 40 people.
Gabriel, the owner, greeted us and gave us a table near the small area. As our main course, choose the newly caught fish ocean. The meal, which was delicious, including vegetables, a salad, a bottle of wine for each couple and dessert. Later, Gabriel launched into a glass of brandy.
The four of us were just customers. However, the performance began on time, at 9 pm The first singer was a short man with glasses, gray hair. He took his place in front of the middle-aged, two men playing stringed instruments and threw her head back, closed her eyes and put his thumbs in his belt and began sing.
We had been told earlier that most of fado songs are about love and misery, a sort of Portuguese blues. Except the words were in a strange language, he could have been on Beale Street in Memphis corner of a lost lover.
Since we had no idea of the expression of sorry, we were free to think of our own lost loves and ambitions or not imagine the story that the singer was on.
I thought he was a former employee of Enron said through quivering lips of lost savings and the prospect of an old condemned to poverty and inadequate medical care.
He was followed by a great woman, strong as a mountain dressed in black lace, the Sophie Tucker's fate. She had a face of parchment ground, but his hair was black and shiny as the wet asphalt. She sang with great passion and presence. I was convinced that she was talking to a handsome husband dead in his youth and maturity to fight in the Civil War Spanish 1930. She had never met his equal.
The singer was also a third woman, younger, with faded red hair and an air of melancholy. She wore a dress flower light, but as the other singers sang slowly, with eyes closed and head held high. I thought she was talking about the lost love of a jealous husband who beat her regularly and drank a lot of his salary.
Each singer performed three songs before giving way to another artist. After the show, each one of them asked us to buy recordings his song on tape or CDs
Fado is not for everyone and can be too slow and sad for the likes of people who grew up with thumping, earsplitting sounds. It has roots old, but there is disagreement about what they are. Some say it dates back to the Middle Ages, with the time of the troubadours and their songs of love. Others believe that it songs came from the Moors, who ruled the Spanish peninsula in 800 years. Another theory is that music comes from the slaves brought to Lisbon to Brazil.
Be Whatever your story, is something that visitors who wish to have an experience of Portugal and its culture should hear at least once.
Besides the Canto do Camões, places that have a reputation for producing the fate "real", includes Parreirinha of Alfama, close to the phage. Its owner and recording artist, Argentina Santos, also does the cooking.
More casual is accomplished fado few streets away in a bar with a limited menu, A Julian's Tavern, operated by Goncal Ferreira, brother of a famous singer. Also known for his fate is the familiar Adega do Ribatejo, where almost everyone sings, sometimes even some of the diners.
