Reading guitar music of jazz?

I'm thinking of joining the faculty of my school () jazz band on guitar, and I have read some letters view, but I wonder if the guitarist is supposed to play each chord shown in the chart "as is" or if there are more options than in jazz chords you have to play? I only ask because I am reading a letter with a ridiculous amount of chord changes and changing the chords completely different in less than a beat. If you also appreciate any pointers on this particular style of guitar playing or maybe some advice on its approach to the reading of difficult parts like these. Thanks

Part of jazz is improvisation. Use the basic chord, but changing it as you wish. For example, the G7 chord use, but there are 20 different ways to use it. Add a 9 or a 6, smooth the grade 5 and many more options
