Guitar Locking Nuts
I'm building a guitar and want to put a nut on. How do I know if I need an up or down mounting nut?
I have a general start style neck w / o anything special about it ....
This is harder than it looks, but I'll try to explain, assuming you have bought a replacement neck typical start. A bottom mount means that you drill the neck and the nut is held in place with screws neck and the nut. A high mountain means he is held in place with 2 or 3 small screws with the nut and the neck. The high mountain is infinitely easier to install. However, both the nut will require you to make a perfectly flat surface to mount it. This means that the slot that should exist be expanded so that the extra part of the scale (for the head) is removed, and the entire surface is not level. If it were me, I would reassess the need for a lock nut, and use a delrin, Tusq, nut or graphite, together with the height adjusted tuners lock (this means that each tuner is a different height depending on where it is the head ... Wilkinson makes them). We have really updated our projects with this and find our customers are much happier.
