Guitar Microphones

The polar patterns of a microphone to indicate how it is sensitive to sounds coming from different angles about its central axis. Some microphones are directional and just get a particular direction, while others will pick up from all around.

There are essentially five main polar responses or pick-up patterns, these are:

Cardioid Pattern - With a cardioid pattern (the name comes from the heart shape pattern), the great Most of the sound is picked up from the front of the microphone, with a reasonable amount of sides. Very little, however, is caught from behind.

As a result, you can point the microphone to the sound you want to catch. This is probably the most commonly used standard you will find, it is very versatile and can be used in virtually all situations.

Hyper-Cardioid Patterns - Hyper-Cardioid microphones have a cardioid pattern similar to but the response side (the off-axis) is smaller. This makes it more directional than cardioid. Hypercardioid microphones are used when the isolation between sound sources is important.

They are less sensitive to sounds off-axis and will not get nearly as easily for free. Another common use is when used live and there is a problem feedback. Hyper-Cardioid microphones are less likely to get leak sound speakers, by their nature more directional and thus reduce the chances of feedback.

Standards Shotgun - The microphones have a pickup pattern very tight and are highly directional. They have small lobes of sensitivity to the left, right and rear, but are significantly more sensitive to the front. This results from placing the element inside a tube with slots cut the lateral wave cancellation eliminates most of the off-axis noise.

They are mainly used to capture sounds from a distance, for example, registration of wildlife. The microphones are also commonly used in TV and movie sets. Uses are in the transmission / film work of recording are where the microphone can be stopped or suspended "off-camera" and theater actors to get on stage without a microphone, individually, all of them.

Due the sensitivity of these microphones, they are all capacitors, and as such, require phantom power.

Standards Omni-directional -- Omni-directional microphones pick up sound from all directions and can also be seen from the polar response. They tend to produce more natural sound of all the standards of funding, capturing the sound source in addition to all the acoustic reverberations and other nuances.

Omni directional microphone are not likely to effect proximity as are cardioid. As such, they are mainly used for recording work. Omni's are not normally used for work live, as it would pick up unwanted noise, as the audience and the sound of the speakers, creating a horrible feedback problem.

Figure 8 Patterns -- Figure-of-8 microphones again tend to find their use for the work of recording, capturing the sound of the front and back of the microphone, but not the sides. They are often used to make stereo recordings.
