MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. Midi is a control protocol that allows any MIDI-capable device to communicate with other MIDI devices via MIDI cables. Typically, for guitar, midi switch allows the User with the effects of both a foot controller (midi capable of course) or any computer equipped with midi. Midi has many advantages and it is not difficult to understand. For midi to do anything, there should be two MIDI devices. A sends information (called messages), while the other receives. You can connect multiple MIDI devices together in chains, either in series or in parallel. You may have a central device (like a computer or the foot) that controls various other MIDI devices. You can also create music stations work to automatically send program change at predetermined times in a song. For guitar players, midi is most often used to change multiple effects on and off with a foot controller. The advantage there is that you can reset various pedals or "effects" with only a single tap of your foot.
