Guitar Oil Finish

Repainting my bass?
A friend of mine gave me his bass guitar, yamaha was a pretty crappy, and he had no strings on it, the color was horrible, so i striped the paint off it and my friend is currently working on a painting of oil on it bad, my question is, once I get back, which would be the best way to seal the paint [that is, give it a glossy finish, and still allow the project to be visible.] in order to protect from scratching? The guitar has was painted with oil paints, I just want to seal it off with something light so that the paint will not get confused.
Laquer. You generally can not laquer good at Home Depot (but watch and see ... a guy Home Depot will respond differently - at least I have not seen any, no). Anyway ... Laquers good can found in auto-refinishing corridor auto parts stores like Pep Boys, AutoZone, Checker, etc. Pick a color, then choose clear varnish finish. Also ... only laquer laquer thinner will dilute properly - do not use acetone or thinners. If you want some outrageous colors - Use nail polish (it will be expensive to paint a whole guitar, though). Nail polish is another type of high-quality varnish.
