Lynyrd Skynyrd is an American rock band formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1964. The band became prominent in the southern United States in 1973, and rose to the recognition around the world before three members and one crew member died in a road crash in 1977, including the singer and songwriter Ronnie Van Zant. The band returned in 1987 for a reunion tour with Ronnie's brother Johnny Van Zant as lead singer and continues to record music today. The band was inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 13 2006.
In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked the group # 95 on its list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. On November 28, 2005, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced that Lynyrd Skynyrd would be introduced alongside Black Sabbath, Blondie, Miles Davis, and Fri Pistols. They were inducted at the Waldorf Astoria in Manhattan on March 13, 2006. Lynyrd Skynyrd had been nominated 7 times.
On March 13, 2006, Lynyrd Skynyrd was inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the 21st annual ceremony. Recipients included Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, Ed King, Steve Gaines, Billy Powell, Leon Wilkeson, Bob Burns and Artimus Pyle.
Members Lynyrd Skynyrd's Johnny Van Zant is the lead singer, guitar Gary Rossington, Rickey Medlocke on drums, guitar, backing vocals, Mark Matejka on guitar and backing vocals, Robert Kearns on bass and backing vocals, Michael Cartellone on drums, Peter Keys on the keyboard. Touring members of this band are Dale Krantz-Rossington on backing vocals and Carol Chase on backing vocals.
Legends of American rock Lynyrd Skynyrd announced plans for its 2010 tour of the United Kingdom. Is a limited amount of dates or the first time the band has played in the United Kingdom since the release of his album "Gold and Guns" earlier this year.
