Change. It is a word that frightens many. The advent of change in our lives is often greeted with hostility and mistrust, as a species we are creatures habits and our greatest fears, often reside in the unknown.

Musicians must constantly deal with change. The music world is a case interesting with regard to change in that you're damned if you do and damned if you do not. Often a band will try to change their sound to stay fresh and exciting just to be shot down in flames. However, if you stay the same You're accused of being old and past his best.

It is a bit difficult to maintain, and some artists manage it. It seems to be getting more difficult, as we see less bands career move, and one hit wonders and fashion win popularity acts very quickly, before disappearing into obscurity.

One of the best examples I can think of where a band was dramatically affected by changing its sound is the Smashing Pumpkins. The band released their first album, Gish in 1991 on a wave of new acts grunge and early 90's alt-rock popularity. Although the album was well received, not the Smashing really hit the big time until their second album, Siamese Dream.

Siamese Dream was in all respects, a continuation the sound that the band had established in Gish. Much more ambitious than many of their peers in time, the album has a lot of overdubs, studio tricks and guitar solos, that was out of fashion at the time. Nevertheless, the first single, today was a success on MTV and the band was hailed as a major rock acts.

His next album made another change in sound, this time they went into epic rock territory, employing even more instruments and much more expressive ideas. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness was a double album, which seemed huge to explore all sides of Billy Corgans musical personality. Despite a change in sound the root of their sound was still there. The album was full of hard rock classics that anyone that loved Siamese Dream instantly connected. Songs such as Bullet With Butterfly Wings and Zero became mid-alt 90 Rock Classics 1979 alongside the more introspective and thirty-three.

Here was an example of a band that managed to change their sound, remain fresh and gain fans and momentum the road. It was a bold step to release such a huge body of work at a time when the nu-metal was just beginning to gain popularity, but has the power to change your style may have to win new fans and still be cool.

It is important for a musician to progress and change, otherwise, become bored with what you're playing. I can not even imagine what it must be like to tour an album for a couple of years and then come back and write a note which is almost exactly the same. I'm sure that the Pumpkins and felt the same as changing it with each release was really the only way they could keep the band going.

Their next release, Adore, was his boldest step yet. After the bombastic power of Mellon Collie, Adore was a quiet, introspective album that showed a darker side, more mature band. Written after several tragic events in the life of the band, seems a natural place to go. However, with the world expecting another typical Smashing Pumpkins album full of epic rock songs with heavy guitars Adore was released full of piano melodies and electronic beats.

In short, the album was not well received by the press or the public. Instead of taking the album as it was like a brilliant piece of music that has been criticized for not adhering to the formula that the public had for the band. Adore sold substantially less than copies of previous albums and did not reach the same height of popularity since then.

The release of Adore was an example of where artists and to be brave If they feel that they have to change. Having poured everything into making Mellon Collie I'm that Billy Corgan had felt she had exhausted that genre entirely and needed a new musical challenge. Had the band released Mellon Collie part two it would have been inevitably worse than the original, the band would have been eaten in any case.

The key point to the need for progress is that if you really put your heart and soul into making the best album possible, you may in a particular style, as can be expected to repeat that without making something inferior? The answer is that you do not can. I think that is why we see a lot of flash-in-the-pan bands today who seem to be huge for six months and then disappear completely. They do a fantastic debut, try to replicate it and fail.

So if you're a musician my advice would be to never shy away from learning a new style, or taking a new influence, because you never know where your song writing may end. Always try new things and push your limits and you will end up as a much better musician because of it. I'm glad that the Smashing Pumpkins took that brave step releasing Adore as I personally think it's a brilliant album and highly underrated. Ironically, the style would come into fashion several years later with Radiohead produce a similar album with Kid A.
