Building a guitar Machine Heads
Having owned and played guitar for over twenty-five years I've owned lots and lots of different brands and models guitars, some good, some awful, but the Weissenborn acoustic slide still fascinates me beyond comparison. Why? Well, the sound is really like nothing, nothing compares. These guitars stand up, make a statement, "Here I am, I'm different, play me if you can, I am a son of a bitch to learn, but if you can get your head round it, then I'll sing for you and make you happy days!
Think I'm kidding? and try to get one, you'll what I mean ... then after making a goose of himself in the music shop, down the street and buy a CD or Jeff Lang album by Bob Brozman and only check those guys out! Humiliating or what?
I must say that I had my eyes on some really high level guitars over the years and I argued: "Well, there is only one pound or two of wood in there, right? "How they are the big three? Well, is the knowledge that hundreds of luthiers have over the years giving these things on the tags that they have not you? However, I read a book on marquetry and there was a little bit about how widely the millionth Martin was built ... Wait a minute. a Martins MILLION? Embedded with a computer? Whoa, that's not exactly meticulously hand crafted .. it is the production mass more like ... then how can they still get three grand a piece? Certainly the mass production makes things much cheaper, right?
Is it me or is something not quite right here? Well, do not get me wrong here, most modern factory guitars are made and to be honest not can be much difference in the technique of making these guitars at the factory, it can be? Ok, that leaves only a couple of things, the quality of the material, the best fret wire, heads better clothes, better wood, aha, the wood. But certainly I can not do it a couple or three big difference between a production Ashton or a series of seven Taylor? Ok so that the most expensive to use, we know it!
Okay, the name, perhaps, could be a big part of it? When I decided to build my Weissenborn, I decided to get some wood very good quality, Australian Maple, but the boys and girls, it was a grand .. I say how much, but it was cut to size and thickness for me! l Work becomes much on price, of course, a hand made non-guitar factory, and it makes a huge difference to the cost of these days. So what if your free time?
Well, we could argue for hours about all the different factors, but in the end, in fact, it really worth make an effort and build your own guitar. I started with a weissenborn because quite honestly, the spacing fretboard are nowhere near as critical as a guitar normal fingered acoustic ... so its a good start with!
I discovered one thing, when I had finished my guitar when I put my machine GOTOH heads to the guitar is really critical to have them more accurate, as far as is practical. They are not the best machine heads, but are acceptable for the job. After all, the post of head of the machine is really one of the only things that transmit the vibrations down the head of the guitar. I really do not realize it, but allowed the setting of the machine head to drop without realizing it. Of course, they need a bed for the wood and once that is compressed down a little, the machine heads will inevitably loosen. I had begun to wonder why the guitar sound and brightness had "gone" I thought it was a mistake, the strings get a little older, but when I reinforced the machine head nuts on the guitar came to life again ... honestly sounded like a different guitar. So if you have a guitar that you've played for a while and you're off 'to replace the ropes and while you are in even enhance the tuning pegs and screws! You can be in a bit of a shock!
