guitar string gauges explained
Can someone explain the string guitar gauges and measures?

I'm trying to buy some replacement strings acoustic guitar and have extra light, light, medium and heavy. I do not know what to buy, and would like to know how to find out. thanks

The gauge of the string refers to its diameter (thickness ITS). The thicker the string the best (and usually higher), the sound, but the harder it is to play the guitar like a thick rope to be pressed to reach a certain height. This makes it difficult to press the strings down or to "bend" it. Therefore, the choice of a gauge string is a little more than a compromise. To complicate things, the manufacturer is called "light" may be considered by another manufacturer light "extra" or "average." Each set of characters will tell you the actual thickness of each string. This is measured in hundredths of an inch, so a sequence described as .10, will ten hundredths of an inch in diameter, one, 11 will be 11 hundredths of an inch in diameter, and so on. It comes down to taste and technique, but personally I would avoid "extra light" and "heavy" for guitar. I would go to the "light" or "average." This would mean that the first string (And high) would be 11 or 12 gauge. For more information and try to choose: http://www.highlystrung.co.uk/acatalog/Guitar_strings.html
