Bass guitar technique?

I just started learning bass and the book I have says to alternate use of the index and middle fingers to the strings. What are the advantages of doing this?

It may mean that the guy who wrote the book began in an upright bass. It is the only practical technique for use in an upright position. The two finger method makes it easier to play a standard swing. Are you under "attack" than a pick. Meaning that the beginning of the note is a little softer and the overall sound is a little less hard. It is the technique I've seen mainly in blues, bluegrass and country. But for a beginner, do not make much difference. Most people play with a pick, but it is good in the long run to be able to use a variety of techniques to get the sound you want. Good luck!
