Guitar Tools

This is an interview with Kevin Gaskell, designer and founder of GASKELL GUITARS from Australia. This is from January 2008.
Your company?
Gaskell Guitars
Your name?
Kevin Gaskell (I am the designer)
Your Location (city, etc)
Alexandria, Sydney. Australia
Please give us a brief summary of your company?
Gaskell Guitars is the only guitar maker in the world that only makes left-handed guitars. Based in Australia, Gaskell Guitars is trying to provide popular guitars not previously available as models for left-handed left-handed guitarists in the world. I started at age 10. I got it completely together the end of 2006.
What inspired the launch of its own site?
To get the message: guitarists left hand need not feel left out in the dark, or penalized, or simply be ignored by a left-handed guitarist.
When you launch your first website, and that was it?
We have been in business since the beginning of 2007, but not launch our website by mid-2007. There is still some work to be done, but the most important thing is to get guitars in high quality hands of guitar players in his left hand, which often never given up on finding the guitars we do!
How do you decide on a name for your site?
Brand
What makes it different from other similar offerings?
We are the only company in the world that provides only left handed guitars though seemingly be a small market. No one else is doing it because nobody really cares about the left-handed guitarists who have a lot of cash to flash around and have something done in a custom shop.
What is your ultimate goal?
Corner the market. Internationally. Our brand awareness is growing. People like our products and are good. I am a left-handed guitar player myself so I can talk the talk and walking.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
Still make a profit! Largely driven by passion, like any other purpose that someone is dedicated.
If you had an unlimited development budget development, how would things change?
We would be able to make guitars faster and further satisfy the guitar left-handed - for example, bassists. The demand is greater than supply at this time. It costs money to take another step and then another step.
If your business site is really great, very quickly, you would be able to keep up with demand?
Already struggling to keep the demand of the product! Left Handed guitarists are so passionate. And they should be! They have been kicked in the teeth for many years. All the players know it lefty.
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to face?
The first model is always the most expensive. All our guitars had to be redesigned from scratch and are largely handmade. Tooling (CNC) in plants is designed to make guitars right handed. It has been "interesting" to set this up shall we say. He never would have been difficult to make this guitar right hand and try into a saturated market there. It's much, much cheaper to make guitars right handed.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Making the guitars at affordable prices and still profit. We do not do much in our guitars. We could have charged ridiculous prices because no one else does our models, but after which is called "greedy" and that is where we are. Left Handed Guitarists have been betrayed bad as it is. The other thing is that we struggle with costs Shipping. This is beyond our control. Cost to USA Europe and Australia are quite ridiculous in the post-9/11 world.
The method has been most successful to promote your site?
Classified Ads
As your site runs differed your expectations?
I'm not a builder or site hosting. Each small change or improvement costs money! Good news has a price!
How long have you run the site already, and how long you will continue to keep it if you do not like big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
Since about mid-2007. We intend to keep it going for as long as guitarists left hand or our guitars - hopefully forever!
Why are you doing this?
I was born in New Zealand. I've been playing guitar for 25 years. I always wanted a Gibson Explorer. In 25 years I never saw once and Gibson did once, in the 1980s, when I had no money to buy one. Many other guitars did not come in left hand at the time. 25 years later not much had changed. I decided that if we will be essentially "forgotten" by the major manufacturers of guitars so I'll fill that void. I made my first guitar in 1992 and is developed from there. Customers who bought Gaskell guitars are routinely amazed and grateful to these instruments, not just because the price is good, but because they are excellent, the guitars of high quality that has always been and always will be our intention. We do not "cheap", except the price.
