Scratch Weird / pop sounds with MIDI, I'm doing this right?

I'm just starting with MIDI I understand his theories, but I'm very new to the practice. I have an Axiom 25 key controller interface connected to a Yamaha, which passes through the FireWire Cubase SX3 where I use mostly free VST instruments. When I play / record / Play, I get noises that sound like pops and scratches on audio. This leads me to three possible conclusions: either the computer is not fast enough (unlikely, 1.8 GHz dual core chip, 2 GB of RAM, Windows Vista Home Premium), the signal chain is not fast enough (through a MIDI interface FireWire audio), or MIDI controller itself is damaged and signals of bad (very possible, since I bought it new from Guitar Center). Can any MIDI-masters out there offer some advice, or at least a way to diagnose the problem yet?

Pops and glitches are usually caused softsynths by latency settings inappropriate. I do not have Cubase (I have Cakewalk), but somewhere in Cubase, you should be able to analyze your settings audio hardware, including latency. You may want to adjust the latency a bit - if set at 10 milliseconds (ms) or less, try 20 or 25. Latency give the extra engine VST instrument is long enough to generate the sound properly, without a noticeable delay between pressing the buttons and hear the sound. If you find that you have to adjust the latency to 50 or 60 ms or more to eliminate the failure of sound, then you need to check the audio drivers and / or hardware.
