Not important to play guitar for you ... If you want a guitar that you really do not need to know much about music. If you want to me a musician (regardless the instrument you play) - then it is a very useful tool. Now, a guitarist will learn their scales of standards - and to know, basically, the tonal center. A musician will learn the notes on the guitar and how to build the scale it needs - to know that standards are a useful but limited if you trust them. If you know and understand the circle of fifths and quickly help you memorize all the major and minor scales - what are the notes themselves - the keys are closely related, yadda yadda yadda. - But it is difficult to know just to have the chart, it helps to have a degree in music fundementals, or basic music theory, or a decent teacher, etc.
