guitar wizard

"Pinball Wizard" is one of those songs that has had a life of its own. Completely removed from the original context of the rock opera "Tommy" for which it was written, 'Pinball Wizard' seems to be a story, a little strange lunatic of a "deaf, dumb and blind boy who has managed to master playing pinball. His skill level is great enough to overcome even the most talented of sighted champions, and he goes on to become the king of the pinball community. Can seem that the music was written for children, given their non-threatening broken guitar and seemingly light lyrical content.

The significance of the band and why it was written, of course, quite different. 'Tommy' was the story of a boy who was stolen from the standard way humans are usually offered, and as such, is not a fairy light. The band was worried that perhaps the overall message and themes explored in 'Tommy' it was too dark for public consumption, and that something had to be done to keep people from falling too deeply into the spiritual abyss. This concern was amplified when Critics responded to a rough assembly of the album with little enthusiasm. For the Who Pinball Wizard was a way to give its title character, a skill peculiar treasure it for the audience, although Pete Townshend never been happy with what he considered his "Clumsy" arrangement for the song.

The song was originally intended to be a little less clean cut and happy than the version that was put on the album. Townshend had written letters a little more quality and hoped to imbue the music with the type of school cheekiness and humor that he felt was appropriate for the characters in the story. It is also interesting that of all the songs of 'Tommy', this was the only one who was picked up by rock radio and became extremely popular. Given that the whole piece sounds like a novelty song familiar. The appeal of "Pinball Wizard" was not limited to fans. Artists, as far ranging as Rod Stewart and Elton John recorded cover versions of track, and continues to be a popular cover song for the group of modern rock as well.
