Custom stain his Warwick Bass?

Ok so I bought a low red Warwick. I'm not crazy about the color, so I want is a stain color of wood. Has anyone done anything like this with your Warwick - and have any advice?

I would think you'd have to remove all the varnish first as it will protect the wood stain and make it shit
