Me and my friend want to start playing bass and guitar?

So my friend wants to get a guitar and i want to get a bass and learn to play the instruments and i just wanted to ask what kind of instruments we should get... we want to learn to play them and start by covering songs from bands we like by tabs and try jamming together. So i wanna ask should we get gigbags (like ibanez jumpstart etc.) or should we just buy cheapo instruments and amps like chinese ones? could we get a half decent sound and cover songs half - decently? thanks

dont get the walmart brand guitars...they suck and the sound (if you call it sound) that comes out is like taking a fork and jabbing it in your wall. Next, for starters, yes go get the package deals that come with amp guitar and picks and other stuff. It is cheaper that way and get a Squier Fender, epiphone, or something equivelant to those. Go to Guitar center and play the guitars. you'll know if it is right for you. and while you get your guitars get a distortion pedal. Plan to spend more than $200 but less than $500 , unless your like rich than just go get a Gibson les Paul...=)
