Jazz Guitar Improvisation Scales

Jazz Soloing / Improvising on guitar?
I've always been curious as to guitarists such as Pat Metheny can get the sounds they make out of your guitar soils. What scale should I use? How they do that? Can someone please explain. Thank you very much.
Jazz usually but not always involves modes, scales larger passing tones, improvisation, combining scales, playing "outside" or notes that are not contained in the range from which the chord (which you is playing a solo) was derived. Unlike the Rock, which usually involves major and minor pentatonic scales, Jazz is more complex, using complex melodies and harmonies.
