Compared to its cousin acoustic electric guitar has a very short history. In modern times, the electric guitars are more often associated with genres like rock and roll, blues rock, and jazz. However, this instrument has its roots in big band music of the years 1930 and 1940. As the jazz orchestras of the time grew and their brass sections increased proportionately, the necessity of an amplified guitar became increasingly pronounced. Adolph Rickenbacher, George Beauchamp and Paul Barth, those who eventually founded the Electro String Company, are generally credited with producing the first electric guitars around 1931. Although there are any number of electric guitar manufacturers in the world, some are certainly more famous than others. Fender and Gibson, for example, established his reputation in the 1950 as manufacturers of high quality mass produced guitars, and they remain some of the most popular products available. Other reputable companies include BC Rich, ESP, and Peavey.

The electric guitar has gained some notoriety over the years, thanks to its association with a large number of famous artists, among them, Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, the irrepressible and Keith Richards. Interestingly, there has been a movement over the past decades regarding the use of the guitar power in contemporary classical music. However, such compositions are not so common, and the genres of rock and jazz continue to be the main territory of the electric guitar.
