The first novel by Elizabeth Egerton Wilder, spruce gum box, a novel of historical fiction, has began with his fascination for Maine Aroostook River and its pioneers, and has evolved over several years through research and daydreaming. As she dream, the characters and the plot began to flourish and take on lives of their own. As she puts it, "I knew how the story would start and how it would end, but had no idea what would happen in between. "

Throughout the process, the author relied on stories and people from his childhood, research on the family of her husband in northern Maine with his varied experience in a number of artistic projects. She holds a Bachelor of Arts and Education and worked as a teacher, designer, colorist, owner small business, photographer and artist. She is also a published poet and believed that pieces of it, combined to raise his family and his innate appreciation nature, were all the ingredients needed to fulfill his lifelong goal of writing a book. At 72 years young, she has reached her goal and is working on a sequel.

A native of New England, Elizabeth (Betty) is now living in Eastern PA with Cal, her husband more than 51 years, and her cat Smokey.

In the authors own words:

The Spruce gum box is based on the almost unheard of Aroostook War that took place between Great Britain and the United States in northern Maine in the mid-1800. I first heard about this when we went to visit the Museum Wilder in Washburn, Maine. My husband's family had been part the first "pioneer" for raising the Aroostook River to establish the town near where his great-great uncle built the first sawmill the region. We were told how the city was established by settlers and some Canadian families who have lived along the River. I asked where the Canadians came from and why were they there. We can not answer and that led to five years of research that fills my novel.

Solid spruce or solid cedar?

I found an acoustic-electric that I love, but there are 2 versions one with a solid spruce top and one with a solid cedar. They are both exactly the same price and when I played I can not tell the difference. Which one should I buy and why? If you want to know, I love rock.

The cedar produce a slightly softer tone and more deep over time as it settles, while the spruce will be brighter in comparison. Both are purely based on preference, but as a beginner, you are probably unable to distinguish these differences for now. Either will work fine. Sprucetops are much more common and the wood is more durable if you are not the kind attention or you are afraid of bumps, etc., go with the spruce. (Just a little side info: The tone of acoustic guitars any change over time, they are read the vibrations and air movements. cause the wood to eventually "settle in ".. you may think it is wine - it gets better with age .. but only if you play it. leave him in his case will not do much.
