As a professional guitar instructor, I taught many children how to play guitar. Some started as young as 4, while others were beginners started while in the range of pre-adolescents and adolescents.

Parents and teachers often have doubts about making the right choice when buying a first guitar for his son. I joined the questions that were asked over and created the following guide. For each question below, there is also a link to the video you can watch for more information at the end article.

My son is ready for a real guitar?
Some children become obvious: they love music, and they are really interested in learning guitar.
But for other children, the guitar can be more of a toy or a prop for pretending to be a rock star. There is nothing wrong with that, but if you suspect that your child is not especially serious really buckle down and learn to make music, then you may want to save your pennies and stop purchasing a guitar truth right now.
If your child shows genuine interest in music, then a real guitar is the way to go.

Opinions vary on whether beginners should start with a guitar or an electric guitar.
My personal experience as a guitar instructor convinced me that the best indicator of what kind of guitar to start comes directly from the child.
He or she has shown a strong interest in a particular style of music? Does he or she asks for a particular type of guitar?
In my experience, children who are learning about the kind of guitar are personally most excited about is the children who are most motivated to practice and to learn more.
If you choose an electric guitar, I suggest buying a starter pack, which includes a small amplifier and cable. Thus, you need not worry about picking out the accessories needed for your child to start playing.
If the child did not express their preference as to he or she would like an acoustic guitar or electric, I would suggest getting them on a guitar.

You do not have to spend an arm and a leg on the first guitar. In fact, you really should not spend an arm and a leg on the first guitar, if it turns out to be just a passing interest.
