The Blues is an impulse to keep painful details and episodes of a brutal experience alive in a pang of conscience, to finger its jagged grain, and transcend it, not by the consolation of philosophy but by squeezing it with a near-tragic, near-comic lyricism.
Blues is the name given in form of a musical and a genre created in the African-American communities in the Deep South of the United States in the late 19's spirituals, work songs, field corners, cheers and chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads.
It is a form of african-American origin in which a modal melody has been harmonized with Western tonal chords and evolved an accompanied vocal music and oral traditions of African-American slaves (imported from West Africa, mainly present day Mali, Senegal, Gambia, Ghana) and rural blacks in a wide variety of styles and subgenres, with regional variations in the United States. Blues music also adopted the elements of the air "Ethiopian" minstrel shows and Negro spirituals, including instrumental accompaniment and harmony.
Blues love lyrics are often intensely personal, often contain sexual references and often deal with the pain of betrayal, abandonment and unrequited or unhappy situations such as being unemployed, hungry, broke away from home, lonely, or discouraged because of an unfaithful lover.
It can be subdivided into several sub-genres ranging from country to blues city that were more or less popular at different times of the 20th century. Blues shuffles reinforce or walk down the trance of rhythm and call and response, and form a repetitive effect called groove.
